Course Description

This course explores the history of globalisation. It examines the economic, cultural, social, political and ecological transformations that have increasingly interconnected peoples and places around the globe. Among key issues examined are: the development and maintenance of large, multicultural regional, continental and maritime empires around the globe, the exchange of goods and ideas within and between these empires; the formation of the world-system; the structuring of global production and consumption; the simultaneous globalisation and localization of cultural practice and the challenges these processes have posed to the sovereignty of the nation state.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to: 

1. Demonstrate a knowledge of key processes of and developments in globalisation in world history;

2. Demonstrate an awareness of the diverse causes and consequences of these processes and developments;

3. Critically analyse in oral and/or written form a variety of interpretations and assessments of globalisation;

4. Construct evidence-based arguments in oral and/or written form using historical materials.

Indicative Assessment

Document analysis exercise, 1000 words (20%). Assesses Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4.

Research essay, 2000 words (35%). Assessses Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4.

Examination on course material (35%) Assesses Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4.

Tutorial participation (10%) Assesses Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4.

Workload

Two one-hour lectures and one tutorial per week. Students will be expected to spend an average of seven hours per week outside these contact hours preparing for tutorials and assessment.
