Course Description

This course gives an overview of the world of electronic business. Students are introduced to both the theory and practice of doing business over the Internet and the World Wide Web. Topics covered include: strategy, infrastructure, tools, software, security, online payment methods, design issues, introduction to eGovernment, eLearning and m-Government, virtual communities and social/ environmental issues. Project work involves the strategic analysis and design of an e-commerce solution. The course will also provide an opportunity to have real life experience through case studies and guest speaker presentations from industry experts involved in eBusiness

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements for this course, students should have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Explain the basics of managerial and technical requirement of operating an e-Business system
  2. Report the issues surrounding e-business and its various application in contemporary context
  3. Develop a new online e-Business system
  4. Participate and work in a team environment
  5. Do limited research, evaluation and critical analysis of existing e-Business system

  • Assignment 1 - 10%

  • Examination - 40%
Workload

It is a good idea to set up a study regime that sets out when and what you need to do each week. A good study regime provides sufficient opportunity to properly read, absorb and work through each topic. A commitment of approximately 11 hours per week (including seminars) should be sufficient. This will include:

  • 2 hours a week: lectures/ seminars
  • 1 hour a week: Team coordination for project work
  • 5 hours a week: working on the project
  • 5 hours a week: reading, research, writing and assignment preparation including discussions and online learning in Wattle site

Requisite Statement

INFS1001/2012 Business Information Systems or COMP1100 Introduction to Programming and Algorithms or equivalent knowledge with coordinator'd approval. Knowledge on Web technology is an added advantage for this course.
