Course Description

Provide a complete introduction to the world of electronic business, with a balanced coverage of business and technical topics. Students are introduced to both the theory and practice of doing business over the Internet and the World Wide Web. Topics covered include: infrastructure, tools, software, on-line payment methods, Web design issues and an introduction to various business models.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students are expected to have attained a knowledge of or proficiency in the following areas:

  • Web engineering and its associated evaluation
  • E-Business models, infrastructure and software
  • The context in which e-business is conducted and be able to explain the likely impact of external forces on e-business outcomes
Indicative Assessment

Case Study Review, Critiques, and In-Class Presentation (Individual) – 20%

In-Class Discussion and Debate – 10%

Assignment 1 – Case Study (Individual) – 30%

Assignment 2 – Project (Group) – 40%

Total 100%

Workload

Students taking this course are expected to commit at least 9 hours a week to completing the work. This will include:

  • 2 hour a week: lecture and discussion
  • 2 hours a week: tutorials
  • 5 hours a week: reading, research, writing and assignment preparation

At least an average of 65% (or equivalent) in the final two years of an Australian undergraduate degree

Assumed Knowledge and
Required Skills

It will be assumed that students have undertaken a first course in information systems and are familiar with computerised systems in general as well as the use of the Windows PC operating system and standard office automation software.
