Course Description	This course aims to provide the student with a sound understanding of the fundamentals of data communications, distributed applications, network management and security as they relate to the business environment, business management and staff. It also aims to provide up-to-date coverage of key issues for businesses such as, among others: high-speed networks, mobile networking and TCP/IP technologies from a business perspective, and the use of the Internet, intranets and extranets to support business objectives.
Learning Outcomes	By the end of this course, students are expected to have attained a knowledge of or proficiency in the following areas: The fundamental concepts underlying data communications Different types of networks and the technologies on which they are built Distributed and client/server application architectures The Internet, intranets and extranets Network management aspects and security issues Business aspects of data communication technologies
Indicative Assessment	Assignment 30% Presentation 10% Final Examination 60%
Workload	A commitment of approximately 10 hours per week (excluding the seminar) should be sufficient. For example: 3 hours a week: seminar 2 hours a week: using online resources to aid discussions and weekly assessment 5 hours a week: reading, research, writing and assignment preparation
