Course Description This course provides an introduction to Italian opera and music language and culture. The course develops learners' knowledge of the basic structure of the grammar of opera and its metalanguage, students' pronunciation and phonetic approach to singing. Emphasis is placed upon developing students' understanding of operatic language to produce appropriate interpretations. It also introduces students to the history of Italian opera by considering a variety of concepts and themes linked to opera.
Learning Outcomes

By completion of this course students will be able to: 

  1. listen, read and comprehend brief texts in Italian;
  2. produce written and oral texts requiring a basic knowledge of Italian grammar;
  3. produce phonologically accurate excerpts of songs and arias;
  4. research and present brief commentaries in Italian about composers and operas (themes; music; historical period; artists' most famous performances)
Indicative Assessment

1 Semester-long project (50%) leading to a brief composition, presentation and performance
1 Language of Opera Test (20%)
1 Voice / pronunciation exercise (15%) 
1 Cultural quiz (15%)

Workload 13 two-hour face-to-face lectures, 13 tutorials and 12 hours of practice (voice with accompaniment) for voice students taught by the school of music in lecture/tutorial.
Requisite Statement

Co-requisite: ITAL2013 for BMus (Voice) students only

School of Music students (BMus Voice) will take the course in their first year - no consent is required 

Prior knowledge of Italian not required

Non-music students please consult Italian Studies Program Convener prior to enrolment

The course is not a core Italian language and culture course, therefore it may be taken as an elective or as a thematic option to count towards the Italian major by students of ITAL2005 and ITAL2006 given that the content (grammar of the language of opera, literature and theory) is completely different from what is studied in any Italian language and culture course,  ITAL1002 and ITAL1003; ITAL2005 and ITAL2006; ITAL2007 and ITAL2008.
