Course Description

(a) Principles of the modern Japanese writing system;
(b) Acquisition of hiragana, katakana and 120 kanji;
(c) Reading of graded Japanese texts

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course students should have developed competence in reading and writing Japanese:
i) nature of the Japanese writing system
ii) meanings and practical usages of 120 kanji
iii) writing various Japanese sentences
iv) reading comprehension of about 300-ji passages.

Indicative Assessment

Practice sheets (5%), Periodic tests (30%), Assignment work (30%), and a final examination (35%), to be confirmed towards the end of semester.
