Course Description

As our major means of social interaction language plays an important role in the shaping and expression of our identity. The course takes an intercultural perspective and will explore how issues such as language and nationality, language and gender, and language in social interaction manifest themselves in different European societies and in the wider European context.

Indicative Assessment

1,200 word journal (40%), oral presentation (15%) and 1,500 word research paper (45%).

13 lectures, 13 language/culture-specific seminars, 6 intercultural seminars

Requisite Statement

One of the following, depending on the relevant major: Intermediate French 2 FREN3007 (French major), Intermediate German 2 GERM2106 (German major), Italian Studies - Intermediate 1 ITAL2007 (Italian major), at least one later year LING or LANG course (Applied Linguistics).
