LANG6023 Translation Workshop: Translators and Their Experience

Course Description

The course is designed to expose students to the working experience of published translators from a variety of backgrounds. Students will engage with translators in discussing the concrete problems encountered in specific texts, and will themselves be expected to provide their own versions, and defend their translation rationale, on an empirical basis.

Learning Outcomes

Abilities to comprehend and analyse a published translation, and its underlying rationale. This understanding will then inform their own decisions and strategies in translation.

Indicative Assessment

Two presentations - 10% each

One assignment (1500 words) - 30%

Final essay (3000 words) - 50%

Workload

Three contact hours per week, two hours for the workshop, and one hour for tutorial.

Course Classification(s) TransitionalTransitional courses are designed for students from a broad range of backgrounds and learning achievements, which provide for the acquisition of generic skills; or an informed understanding of contemporary issues; or fundamental knowledge for transition to Advanced or Specialist courses.
Requisite Statement

Permission of convenor. Students taking this course will have been accepted into the Master of Translation Program, or will be able to demonstrate a level of language competence equivalent to students in the program. Incompatible with LANG3023.

Recommended Courses

Advanced competency in a second language.
