Course Description

This course is designed to help students understand the relationship between law and regulation, and the nature of regulation and enforcement. This will be achieved through a careful consideration of theoretical and applied debates. In essence the course asks: what can regulation accomplish and what is beyond its reach? The course includes a variety of case studies and workshops.

Learning Outcomes

Through the course participants will

  • become familiar with a range of classic and ongoing theories and academic debates on law and regulation
  • be able to reflect on the development of past and current regulatory regimes
  • be able to evaluate regulatory regimes
  • be able to consider future directions of regulatory regimes
Indicative Assessment
  • Attendance and participation, 10%
  • Literature summaries and in-class presentation, 20%
  • Research essay, 70%:

Workload

The course requires attendance at 26 hours of face-to-face classes. In addition time for required readings and asssement tasks is required making a total of approximately 120 hours for the course.

Requisite 1054 - (Coreq of LAWS8015)  or (Enrolment in Program 6300 or 7300 or 7312)
