In their Honours year, students take three courses and write a 20,000 word sub-thesis. The coursework and thesis are normally weighted equally, 50% each. Where possible, at least one external examiner is involved in examination of the thesis, in addition to two in-house examiners. An early start is very important to successful completion of Honours. As soon as, or even before they finish the requirements of their pass degree, students should consult with the Honours Convenor to determine a sub-thesis topic and supervisor. It may be that ethics approval is required.

On satisfying the expectations of the course, you should be able to, under supervision, write a well-structured, well-supported and correctly referenced thesis on a topic of your choice.

Assessment for the coursework component (50%) is in accordance with the specific course requirements. Coursework is undertaken at a fourth-year level and so coursework is also assessed at fourth-year i.e. postgraduate level.

The sub-thesis component (50%) involves the writing of a thesis of about 20,000 words.

A meeting schedule for this course will be worked out in consultation with the student. Students will generally meet once per week with their supervisor.

Undertaking honours requires a commitment to producing a sub-thesis in the area of Applied Linguistics by the honours submission date. An early start ensures that this is achieved.

Before enrolling in Honours, students must have satisfied the Honours eligibility requirements.
