MEDI2002 Block 6: Musculoskeletal and Neuroscience Block 7: Human Disease
|
|
Learning Outcomes
|
On completion of Block 6 students should: - Have a basic knowledge of the epidemiology, clinical features, investigations and management of common musculoskeletal diseases
- Be able to undertake a history of musculoskeletal symptoms and perform the required joint examination
- Understand a multidisciplinary team approach to the management of diseases affecting the musculoskeletal system
- Appreciate the principles of management of chronically ill patients and the psychosocial impact of rheumatic disease
- Understand and construct the principles of pharmacological, physical, surgical, and psychosocial management of rheumatic disorders
- Use neuroanatomical knowledge to choose the likely site of the causative lesion for common neurological deficits
- Understand the need to pose the minimum number of causative lesions, based on the regions of intersection of overlap of the major neurological pathways
- Be able to apply the principles of somatotopic organization of neurological structures to patient signs and symptoms and thereby choose reasonable hypotheses about regions of injury or disease
- Be able to apply knowledge of the common neurological diseases to make reasonable estimates of the likely pathological process behind such deficits
- Understand the principles of neurological localisation
- Understand the usual temporal course of common neurological conditions and relate the underlying pathophysiology of neurological disease to the available treatments
- Be able to distinguish between positive and negative neurological symptoms
Block 7 This Block: - Provides an opportunity for revision and integration of core concepts covered in previous blocks.
- Emphasises the complexity of clinical practice.
- Expands on the role of the doctor within a community.
- Explores factors which impact broadly on professional practice.
- Provides an opportunity to bring previous learning into a holistic context
