Course Description

Strategic Human Resource Management (SHRM) explores the relationship between the management of people and pursuit of an organisations strategic goals and objectives.  Specific topics covered include human resource planning and strategy, job analysis and job design, equipment and selection, performance appraisal and performance-related pay, learning and career management, employment relations, diversity management and international human resource management.

Learning Outcomes

The objective of this course is: to identify the key SHRM functions and operations; to aquire a solid historical, theoretical and practical perspective on the key human resource management concepts; indentify the linkages between SHRM functions and operations and organisational strategies, structures and culture; develop an awarenessof the different contexts (economic, political, legal and social) that impact on the operation of SHRM; strengthen key management competencies in decision making, group leadership, oral and written communication and persuasion, critical thinking, problem solving, planning and team work.

HRM Blunder Analysis (group presentation) – 20%
Mid-Semester Exam – 30%
Critical Analysis – 40%

Workload
  • 3 hours a week x 13 workshops plus upto ten hours per week additional study.
