MICR4005F Microscopy IV Honours

Later Year Course

Offered By Centre for Advanced Microscopy
Academic Career Undergraduate
Course Subject Microscopy
Offered in First Semester, 2012, Second Semester, 2012, and Second Semester, 2013
Unit Value 24 units
Course Description

The various microscopic techniques provide a wealth of different types of morphological, structural and compositional information on materials ranging from inorganic to biological.  This is an exciting field in which the technological limits of what is achievable are advancing constantly.  However, intensive study that is best provided by a specialist unit such as the Centre for Advanced Microscopy is required to get the most out of any sample or technique. The Honours Plan in Microscopy will give students from a wide range of disciplines the skills and opportunity to conduct an Honours-level research project with an emphasis on developing expertise in principles and applications of electron microscopy, with this research presented as a thesis. The coursework component will also allow students to augment their knowledge further in applications to the students' specialist disciplines and/or complementary techniques.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this program students will have:

1. Undertaken an original research project including a literature review, project planning, experimental data collection and analysis, and discussion;

2. Gained experience in proposing, costing, and managing a project over 40 weeks;

3. Developed high order oral and written communication skills; and

4. Acquired new knowledge and skills that are complementary to their research project by undertaking appropriate coursework.

Indicative Assessment

1. The Thesis  will constitute from 50 % to 70% of the final mark by prior written agreement between convener and student (LO 1, 2 and 3);

2. Proposal talk and final presentations will each constitute 5% of the final mark (LO 1, 2 and 3); and

3. Two to four course components will consitute the remainder of the final mark, at the rate of 10% per 6 units of coursework (LO4). Courses to be taken will be subject to prior agreement with course conveners and written agreement between Honours convener and student.

Workload

The courses will require approximately 60 hours each of contact and non-contact time, totalling 240 to 480 hours. The thesis project will require another 480 (50% thesis) to 720 (70% thesis) hours of largely independent research, and about 30 hours of contact with the student's supervisor.
