MICR8102 Scanning Electron Microscopy for Biological Sciences

Course Description

This course will given theoretical and practical understanding in SEM imaging and advanced technology of SEM for application in the biological sciences. Students will have the opportunity to tailor a practical session to suit their particular interests or needs.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to: 

1.  to use an analytical scanning electron microscope independently for imaging; (LO1)

2. recognise the critical instrument parameters; (LO2)

3. have strategies for manipulating these parameters to give an optimal result; (LO3)

4. to configure and accessorise a SEM for specific needs; (LO4)

5. to align and maintain a SEM in optimum conditions; (LO5)

6.  have the tools required to provide quantitative and qualitative outcomes (LO6)

Indicative Assessment

(1) Multiple-choice questions and written assignments for tutorials (20%); (LO 2,3)

(2) Mid-term exam (20%); (LO 2,3,6)

(3) Assessable practicals (20%); and (LO 1,4,5,6)

(4) A written report and oral presentation of second practical project (40%).  (LO 1,4,5,6)

Workload

• Average weekly workload will be two hours of lectures;

• Four hours of associated reading;

• One hour of tutorials and assessments, which will include virtual and telepresence practicals, will be given for every six hours of lectures; and

• Some associated preparation time. 

• Access to sample preparation facilities and scanning electron microscopes at  the students’ home laboratories for practical and project work, for an average of two hours per week over the semester.

Course Classification(s) AdvancedAdvanced courses are designed for students having reached 'first degree' level of assumed knowledge, which provide a deep understanding of contemporary issues; or 'second degree' and higher levels of knowledge; or for transition to research training programs.
Requisite Statement

Prerequisite is at least a Bachelors degree or equivalent work experience at the discretion of the Program Convener.

Recommended Courses

Knowledge of cell biology and molecular biology would be beneficial.

Technology Requirements

Students must have access to computers with fast internet connection, webcams, temporary LifeSize license (which we will arrange) and Skype in order to access remote learning resources. Access to scanning electron microscopes and sample preparation facilities at their home laboratory is required for remote learning.
