Course Description

The Creative Practice courses are a series of four courses integrating a broad suite of skills that underpins the study of the various languages of music - classical, jazz, contemporary and cross-cultural. Creative Practice 1 is compulsory for all BMus students.  It introduces students to fundamental skills and concepts in composition, theory, analysis, aural, improvisation, and music technology that they will require to complete the BMus and be musically literate musicians. 

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course you will be able to:

  1. Hear, notate, transcribe, describe and create fundamental elements of musical structure: pitch, melody, harmony, rhythm, form and timbre.
  2. Create original small-scale musical works as a composer or improviser
  3. Use basic applications and software for the notation, capture, manipulation and dissemination of sound and music.
Indicative Assessment
  1. A portfolio of six exercises which may be aural, theoretical and/or compositional and may include in-class listening exercises (40%) [learning outcome 1]
  2. Completion of three music technology assignments in class and completed in the students’ own time (30%) [learning outcome 3]
  3. A portfolio of two compositions OR two assessed improvisations (30%) [learning outcome 1-3]
Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a)                 48 hours of contact:

  1. 24 hours of core workshops
  2. 12 hours of extension workshops
  3. 12 hours of technology workshops

b)                82 hours of independent student work
