Course Description

This course will outline the fundamentals of professional-level music recording, both in the studio and in the field. An overview will be given of essential theoretical concepts before students are introduced to the practicalities of specific recording contexts, and the use of specific hardware.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Understand and define key audio concepts and principles
  2. Apply theory and principles to practical situations,
  3. Describe sonic characteristics in technical terms
  4. Organize resources (musicians, equipment and venues) to undertake a sound recording
  5. Plan and document the use of resources including details of setup and settings used.
Indicative Assessment
  1. Two studio-based technical tasks with accompanying commentary (750 words each) (20% each) [learning outcomes 1-3]
  2. One recording project (40%) [learning outcomes 1,2,4]
  3. Recording log documenting the project, including description of the technical issues faced and the solutions found (1500 words) (20%) [learning outcomes 1-5]
Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:

a) 36 hours of contact – studio-based workshops

b) 94 hours of independent work in the field or researching theoretical issues
