Building on skills developed in MUSM2211, this course will give students an opportunity to complete an extended and focused piece of research on a musical topic. Topics will reflect the current research projects of the school and the wider community, and involve the development of skills in collaborative research. In most cases the research project will be  a group activity aligned with a research project of the School, but students, with permission, may also undertake individual research projects.

By the end of the course, you should be able to demonstrate:

1. developed research skills appropriate to your area of research, and an understanding of the materials, critical, historical, and oral sources of music research
2. the ability to work independently with minimal supervision
3. understanding of the relationship between research and creative practice, and/or between applied research and professional practice
4. understanding of music from historical, contemporary, and cross-cultural contexts
5. Developed vocabulary and tools for speaking and writing critically about music
6. The ability to identify and communicate your emerging research skills to others

• A research project of 3000–4000 words or creative equivalent (70%) [Learning Outcomes 1–6]
• Research diary or other reflective process (30%) [Learning Outcomes 1–5]

A mixture of seminars and workshops equivalent to three hours per week, plus seven hours of independent study per week.

Students may only pursue Music Research Projects with the permission of the Head of School and agreement of the supervisor.
