Course Description

Advanced Improvisation 1 develops the student's practical ability in improvisation, informed by theoretical, aural, historical, cultural and stylistic concepts. It deepens the student's understanding of structure within improvised music and the historical and cultural contexts which affected its development. Emphasis is placed upon developing the student's melodic, harmonic, rhythmic and aural skills as well as their ability to accurately transcribe and analyse music from sound recordings and live performances.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, you should be able to demonstrate:
1. A well-developed knowledge of improvisation techniques in a variety of harmonic and rhythmic settings and forms.
2. A well-developed application of these techniques to  your chosen instrument.

Indicative Assessment

Precise details of assessment requirements and criteria vary according to the nature of the instrument/ voice and the needs of the student, but typically consist of:

  • Midterm performance exam 30% ( learning outcomes 1,2,3)
  • Final Performance exam 40% (learning outcomes 1,2,3)
  • Transcription and written analysis  project 30%( learning outcome 4)
Workload
  • 2-hour improvisation lecture/practical
  • 1- hour tutorial/practical
  • 7- hours research and preparation

MUSI2204 Music Creative Practice 4

Recommended Courses

Students should ideally have at least two years' improvisation experience in one or more of the jazz, pop and modal genres.

Prescribed Texts

Supporting written and aural material pertaining to the stylistic specifics of each unit will be prescribed by the lecturer.
