MUSM1305 Foundation Musical Skills

Course Description

This course enables students to develop in music theory, aural, keyboard harmony and other foundational music literacy skills to a point at which they are equipped to engage with most of the academic and practical music courses offered at undergraduate level.  The course is particularly designed to be taken flexibly - with students working intensively, or part-time, or online.  Students will negotiate a specific package of skills to be developed based on their needs, their prior experience, and the focus of their other studies in music.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate basic concepts of music literacy
  2. Explain fundamental theoretical concepts: triads, intervals, elementary voice leading, melody writing, harmonic analysis
  3. Execute fundamental aural skills: sight singing, sight reading, rhythmic and melodic dictation
  4. Execute basic keyboard sight-reading, chord and hand patterns, and harmonic realization
Indicative Assessment

A portfolio of 10 exercises demonstrating attainment of the skills listed under learning outcomes 1-4 above.  (100%)

Workload

c. 35 hours of total contact time (intensive, online, or over a semester) with a further 80 hours of individual working time on average.  Students negotiate a package of face-to-face, online, and independent study modes dependent on their needs.

None.  Course is designed to take students with only a rudimentary music-theoretical knowledge.
