This course aims to further develop skills undertaken in Conducting 3 by music students in enhanced disciplines of orchestral conducting. The course will enhance the student's skills required to operate within existing orchestral resources. In the Australian context, the course will further hone managerial and efficiency skills. The course focus for Conducting 4 is on:

• The orchestral recitative
• Contemporary and Australian orchestral repertoire

Students will be challenged with the core knowledge of and skills for rehearsing and performing a broad spectrum of musical styles. The course aims to equip music students with the abilities to:

• Adapt and be flexible in a changing musical environment according to need and available resources
• Adapt skills to manage and direct others within a given orchestral context
• Build the student's resource base to enhance capabilities of fluent music score reading, score arrangement, score application and assignment of music instruments
• Competently manage time, manage resources and manage environmental context, such as venue, set-up, rehearsal schedule etc

• Conduct an orchestra efficiently and effectively
• Investigate and select appropriate musical scores for a given orchestra within the parameters set by the course focus
• Demonstrate clear understanding of the musical score and its historical/social context
• Read and comprehend clefs, meter, and understand linguistic demands in a given score
• Reflect on and discuss own learning as it relates to the course subject matter

Portfolio Journal Assignment 1,000 words plus scrapbook compilation of materials gathered throughout the course (30%), Mid-Semester recitative assessment (30%), Participation (10%), and End of Semester performance examination (30%)

Students undertake class instruction (average of one hour per week) plus relevant practical conducting experience.

• An A=440Hz pitch fork
• A portable tuning device
• A metronome
• A 2B pencil, eraser, sharpener
• A paper notebook
• The compulsory set musical score
• Clean manuscript paper

Conducting 4 students must own a conductor's baton.
