MUSM2280 Introduction to Drum Kit

Course Description

This elective is designed to give participants a basic understanding of Drum Kit styles, techniques, and pedagogy. Instruction will be delivered in a group class format in the "state of the art" DRUM KIT Group Musicianship Studio and will involve hand and foot coordination, analysis of historic styles and techniques.  Pedagogical theories and styles will be examined. Students will perform in the following styles: Swing, Be Bop, Latin, Funk, Rock and Roll, Afro Cuban, and Country.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, students should be able to:
1. Analyze and internalize current and historical trends and styles in Drum Kit / Drum Set.
2. Use specific musical examples and theories to explain key concepts, themes and theories in Drum Kit performance and pedagogical practice.
3. Think, write and argue with these key concepts, themes and theories.
4. Reflect on and discuss their own learning as it relates to the subject matter of the course.

Indicative Assessment

Mid term performance exam (40%), Final performance exam (60%)

Workload

Contact: 1.5 hours per week plus individual practice, 1 - 3 hours per week.
