MUSM2310 Introduction to Performance Wellness

Course Description

This course is intended for performing musicians and those who work with them, such as music educators.  It examines physiological and psychological issues bearing on health during performance and practice, with the aim of providing students with practical and useful advice on changing harmful behaviours as well as developing students' theoretical understanding of these issues.

Wellness issues studied may change according to students' needs.  Some relevant healing modalities will be critically examined.  From time to time guest specialists in the health sciences may be invited to contribute to lectures and tutorials.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, you should be able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of the historical background of performing arts medicine;
2. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the body systems;
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the mechanisms of performance anxiety and strategies for their management;
4. Explain the importance of posture and the principle of compensation and injury prevention;
5. Recognize and manage difficulties that impact on a performer's well being and identify sources of help within the university and in the wider community;

Indicative Assessment
  • Written research paper 2500 words(50%, Learning Outcomes 1-3, 8-11);
  • One 15 min tutorial presentation (50%, Learning Outcomes 4-11).
Workload

One one-hour lecture and one two-hour tutorial each week.
