MUSM2319 Introduction to Music Technology

Course Description

The digital age - students will gain a basic proficiency and knowledge of:

  • Musicians and their use of Technology
  • Computer and Internet Concepts for Musicians
  • Digital Audio Basics

This course mentors students through interactive engagement with computer hardware, software and peripherals.

Participants will also develop an appreciation of the fusion between music and technology in its cultural contexts through selected reading, listening and "hands on" assignments.

Students will gain further proficiency and knowledge of music Sampling and Sequencing as well as basic audio recording with Digital Audio Workstations (DAW'S) through interactive engagement with computer hardware, software and peripherals. Students will also continue to develop an appreciation of the fusion between music and technology in its cultural contexts through selected reading, listening and "hands on" assignments.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:


1. Analyze, evaluate and discuss the ways technology influences our interaction with music. 
2. Source, identify and comprehend technological resources as they function within society. 
3. Produce music through the application of various hardware and software programs. 
4. Reflect on and discuss your own learning as it relates to the subject matter of the course.

Indicative Assessment
  • Portfolio of weekly assignments  each c.500 words (50%, Learning Outcomes 2-3)
  • mid-term exam (25%, Learning Outcomes 1-3),
  • Final exam (25% Learning Outcxomes 1-4),
Workload

One three-hour seminar/workshop per week, or online equivalent, plus up to 90 hours of independent study time.
