Course Description

This course extends the students' ability to hear and apply concepts of musical language developed in Aural 2. It extends the students' inner hearing, aural awareness and skills in listening and notating music through sight-singing, sight-reading, dictation/transcription and aural analysis. This course aims to further deepen the student's understanding of more complex musical vocabulary and structures, and of more advanced melodic, rhythmic and harmonic concepts. There is a strong emphasis on the application of these concepts to the music literature.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, you should be able to:

  1. demonstrate an aural understanding of advanced rhythmic, melodic and harmonic tools;
  2. apply an advanced aural understanding to enhance performance, composition and academic skills;
  3. Work with others to employ advanced aural skills in a group performance situation
Indicative Assessment
  • Three progress tests (50%), [Learning outcomes 1 and 2]
  • Weekly in-class assessments (50%), [Learning Outcomes 1-3]
Workload

Three hours per week, one weekly lecture and one weekly tutorial and attendance at aural choir.

All components are 1 hour each

Prerequisite:  MUSM2317

Incompatibility:  MUSM3247 and MUSM3248
