Course Description

This course aims to introduce music students to the discipline of orchestral conducting. The course will acquaint the student with the skills needed to establish and develop an orchestra. Assuming that most will begin a career in orchestral conducting juggling need with resources in the Australian context, the course will equip the student with certain managerial and efficiency skills.  Students will be challenged with the core knowledge of and skills for rehearsing and performing a broad spectrum of musical styles.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  1. Conduct orchestral scores efficiently and effectively
  2. Investigate and select appropriate musical scores for a given orchestral ensemble
  3. Demonstrate clear understanding of the musical score and its historical/social context
  4. Read and comprehend transposing instruments, short score, complex rhythms, tempo, beat, phrasing and dynamics
  5. Arrange a musical score efficiently and effectively
  6. Reflect on and discuss your own learning as it relates to the course subject matter
Indicative Assessment

Personal Journal Assignment  (1000 words) (20%), [Learning Outcomes 1-5],

Mid-Semester sight reading assessment (20%) [Learning Outcomes 2-5],

Participation (10%), [Learning Outcomes 1-4]

End of Semester performance examination (50%) [Learning Outcomes 1-5]

Workload

Students undertake class instruction (average of three hours per week) plus relevant practical conducting experience.

  • A portable tuning device
  • A metronome
  • A conductor's baton
  • A 2B pencil, eraser, sharpener
  • A paper notebook
  • The compulsory set orchestral score
  • Clean manuscript paper
