Later Year Course

Offered By School of Philosophy
Academic Career Undergraduate
Course Subject Philosophy
Offered in Second Semester, 2012 and Second Semester, 2013
Unit Value 6 units
Course Description

This course offers an advanced approach to analytic philosophy, suitable for students who have a strong background in philosophy, and may be interested in continuing into honours 4. What is taught will change from year to year. In 2012, our concern will be with ideas about autonomy, and how they relate to issues in metaphysics. We look, initially, at some historical and ethical material, but our main concern will be with issues ex plored in John Christman (ed.) The Inner Citadel, and James Stacey Taylor, Personal Autonomy.

Learning Outcomes The student will:
    (1) become familiar with some of the reasons why philosophers have been concerned with the topic of autonomy;
    (2) have had the opportunity to grapple with issues concerning autonomy, and the problems of how it might be understood, metaphysically;
    (3) have the opportunity to develop their own understanding of these issues, and to receive detailed critical feedback on their work, and also to engage in critical discussion of the issues to which this material gives rise.
Indicative Assessment

Two 2,500 word essays (45% each), and tutorial participation (10%); all three learning outcomes will be addressed in each element of assessment. Students will also have the opportunity to submit a short essay plan for the first essay, for non-assessed feedback.
