Course Description

This course is an Honours Pathway Course (HPC) and builds on the basic concepts presented in first and second year cognitive psychology and examines issues of contemporary interest. Topics are likely to include memory, social cognition, language (including developmental dyslexia) face perception (including prosopagnosia, emotion, attractiveness) and executive functioning.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of this course, students should have obtained: 

  1. A sound understanding of fundamental concepts and major themes in cognitive psychology.
  2. An appreciation of contemporary issues in cognitive psychology and an understanding that psychology as 
    a science is a moving, changing field.
  3. an understanding of the diversity of approaches to studying cognition, including behavioural, 
    neuropsychological and neuroimaging.
  4. An ability to critically evaluate cognitive research.
  5. Experience designing and conducting behavioural experiments.
  6. An awareness of the clinical and practical applications of cognitive research. 
Indicative Assessment

To be arranged in consultation with students, but including an invigilated examination and a research assignment. The examination must be passed in order for an overall pass in the course to be awarded.  In 2009, the assessment included an end-of-semester exam (55%), a research assignment (35%), and a class presentation (10%).

Workload

Two hours of lectures per week and 18 hours of laboratories spread across the semester.
