Course Description	This course looks at traditional mass media including newspapers, magazine and radio. The course acquaints students with these media types and introduces them to the skills needed to communicate science using each media.
Learning Outcomes	On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to: 1. Locate and research science stories suitable for traditional mass media outlets 2. Write about science clearly and in 'plain English', adapting style and content for different publications and style of publication 3. Write, read and record items for voice media 4. Understand and evaluate scientific information in the context of a news story
Indicative Assessment	Assessment will comprise: News-style story, with students writing story in traditional news style based on scientific article provided by lecturer (5%; LO 2, 4) News-style story based on newsworthy journal article from scholarly publication sourced by student, written in traditional news-style (20%; LO 1, 2, 4) News-style story based on newsworthy public event (lecture/conference) sourced by student, written in traditional news-style (25%; LO 1, 2, 4) Feature-style story based on newsworthy journal article from scholarly publication OR public event (lecture/conference) sourced by student, written in traditional feature-style (30%; LO 1, 2, 4) Radio story based on newsworthy journal article from scholarly publication OR public event (lecture/conference) sourced by student, written as form or radio script and recorded (20%; LO 1, 3, 4)
