Course Description

Insurance markets and products; underwriting and risk assessment; policy design; actuarial modelling; actuarial assumptions and feedback; reserving methods.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the requirements for this course, students will be able to:

  • Discuss and apply an actuarial control cycle in a variety of practical commercial situations
  • Relate the main features within the general environment to medium and long-term commercial decisions
  • Analyse the main features of the financial services marketplace including products and distribution channels
  • Examine the need for, and impact of, regulation and government policy on medium and long-term commercial decisions
  • Recognise the importance of capital
  • Understand and apply an enterprise risk management framework to identify and assess the risks in a range of situations
  • Select and build an appropriate model to solve client problems
  • Discuss and apply the process of product design
  • Apply the tests of professionalism

Workload

Four hours per week of lectures and/or tutorials plus private study time.
Professional actuarial course for the Honours year of Actuarial Studies Degree.

Eligibility

At least an average of 65% (or equivalent) in the final two years of an Australian undergraduate degree with at least two years of university level statistical and mathematical study including calculus and linear algebra, as well as mathematical statistics and linear regression theory.

Requisite Statement

Enrolment in ACST4004P/F Actuarial Studies IV Honours.
