The major in Capital Markets is concerned with applying the basic concepts introduced in the core finance course (FINM1001 Foundations of Finance) to study the financial decisions facing the firm; investment decisions and portfolio management; derivatives and risk management; portfolio construction; corporate valuation; and debt markets. The aim of the major in Capital Markets is to develop skills and competencies in students that will enable them to embark upon a professional career in the fields of corporate financial management, financial consulting and planning, funds management, investment banking and stockbroking.

 

Learning Outcomes 

1. Have an understanding of the three basic ideas underpinning finance: the time value of money; diversification; and, arbitrage and their application to corporate financial decision-making; investment decisions and portfolio management; derivatives and risk management; portfolio construction; corporate valuation; and debt markets.

2. Understand the role of lending and risk management decisions of banks and financial intermediaries in financial markets

3. Understand the pricing and hedging of options, futures and other contingent claims and their role in risk management.

4. Have an understanding of investments theory, as well as knowledge of the issues associated with the application of this theory in a practical setting, in particular, how it applies to portfolio construction.

5. Have the knowledge and skills to apply discounted cash flow analysis to corporate investment, financing, dividend and merger and acquisition decisions.

6. Understand and apply finance theory to company valuation in a practical setting.

7. Develop the skills necessary to work independently and collaboratively to collect, process, interpret and communicate the outcomes of financial problems.

 

Prerequisites

Some courses in the major require the completion of FINM1001 Foundations of Finance and STAT1008 Quantitative Research Methods.

This major requires the completion of 48 units, which must include:

FINM2003 Investments

FINM3005 Corporate Valuation

FINM3006 Financial Intermediation and Debt Markets

FINM3008 Applied Portfolio Construction

MGMT3015 Corporate Strategy

STAT2008 Regression Modelling
