This minor is available only to students undertaking the Bachelor of Professional Music Practice degree program. 

The Instrumental Pedagogy minor equips students from a music background with the skills to operate successfully as an instrumental music teacher.  Students take a core course in instrumental pedagogic technique, together with a selection of courses from the music practice sphere enabling them to develop a blend of practical skills of use in music-teaching situations: performance, arranging, conducting, aural skills, and many others.  In this minor the student develops further his or her depth of understanding of the learning and teaching issues surrounding instrumental music, complementing the music-business focused courses which comprise the Professional Music Practice major.

 

Learning Outcomes

Students completing the Instrumental Pedagogy minor will:

  • Gain an understanding of the essential aspects of teaching and learning as they pertain to instrumental pedagogy;
  • Reflect on their own teaching practice in either a simulated or real-world teaching environment;
  • apply relevant skills and knowledge to produce and realise musical works, performances, improvisations and other forms of creative expression;
  • have the opportunity to work independently and collaboratively in music in response to authentic project demands in the role of performer, manager and teacher;

Requirements

This minor requires the completion of 24 units, which must include:

12 units from the completion of two of the following 1000-level courses:

MUSM1301 - The Complete Musician 1 (6 units)

MUSM1302 - The Complete Musician 2 (6 units)

MUSM1303 - Jazz Harmony, Arranging and Composition 1 (6 units)

MUSM1304 - Jazz Harmony, Arranging and Composition 2 (6 units)

MUSM1306 - Turning Points in Music History (6 units)

MUSM1307 - What Music Means (6 units)

 

A minimum of 6 units from the completion of courses from the following list:

MUSM3251 - Music Education Program Professional Practice (6 units)

MUSM3252 - Instrumental Music Education: principles and practice of instrumental music teaching (6 units)

 

A maximum of 6 units from completion of one of the following courses

MUSM2302 - Performance (workshop) 1 (6 units)

MUSM3300 - Performance (studio) 1 (6 units)
