Course Description  This unit introduces students to the theories and practices of the new paradigm in music education designed and developed by the ANU Music Education Program. Music making, principally via singing, is approached from the social perspective as a means of increasing engagement and promoting well being for self and others.  Participants learn to enhance their own music making practice and pass on the approach to others. A feature of the course is its focus on helping develop the musicianship of others so under-graduate students will participate alongside graduate teacher active in the system who have different levels of music expertise.
Learning Outcomes

Students are able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the basic principles of the Music Education Program.
  • Select and sing a range of repertoire, both individually and in a group, that demonstrates understanding of the principles and practice of the MEP.
  • Show the ability to apply those principles in practice in both tutorial and real-life teaching situations.
  • Demonstrate a pro-active ability to develop their own teaching activities based on the MEP model.
  • Demonstrate the ability to reflect upon and improve their performance approach and/or teaching practice with reference to principles learned during the course.
Indicative Assessment

Attendance required at 85% of classes for completion.

1.  In-class participation (10%): students are expected to contribute to workshops in an active way that demonstrates both involvement and developing understanding of the concepts presented.

2.  Journal/portfolio (90%): students will keep a journal throughout their participation in the course detailing their ideas and thoughts on workshop content. The minimum content of the journal will be (balance of activities and percentage for each will be negotiated with each student):

  • 2 short commentaries (500-1000 words) on subjects raised in workshop as presented by lecturer.
  • Written critique/description of 2 observed lessons, detailing relationship with concepts introduced in lectures.
  • Notes to accompany a presentation lesson utilizing aspects of MEP model (depending on availability this lesson will be presented to course participants or to a class at a participating school), including pre-presentation notes, full lesson plan and post-lesson evaluation.
  • 1 written paper/tutorial presentation on an aspect of class content (3000 words, or equivalent).
  • Workload The course is delivered on-campus but aspects of observation/practice teaching occur off-campus in the ACT and local NSW as required. Workshops are held weekly and/or intensively at the discretion of the lecturer in consulation with participants. Detail of delivery includes:
    • Sixteen 1.5 hour classes delivered in weekly and/or intensive blocks in consultation with participants.
    • Attendance at and participation in at least 2 outreach events off-campus at participating schools and/or community facilities.
    • Observation of expert practitioners in at least 2 class-room situations at participating schools.
    • Teaching practice undertaken at participating MEP schools as appropriate.
