The Bachelor of Development Studies prepares students for a variety of careers related to the development of Third World countries. These careers may be focused primarily on economic, social or political development, and based in Australian institutions or abroad. ANU is a leader in the field of Development Studies and has established relationships with Australian and international aid and development organisations. Students taking the degree should achieve an inter-disciplinary understanding of theory and practice concerning the processes of development in the Third World, with special competence concerning one or two of four areas: Central Asia and the Middle East, China, Oceania, South and Southeast Asia, together with a solid background in one of the relevant social science disciplines.

Learning outcomes

Successful completion of this program enables students to:

• identify the theory and principles of development
• analyse the practice of development through multilateral, bilateral, government and non-government agencies.
• recall critical development issues in particular regions of the South
• engage in one of the social science disciplines or a language other than English

Admission Requirements

Admission to all programs is on a competitive basis, taking into account all relevant academic qualifications. If you hold more than one qualification, admission will be based on your overall record. Tertiary qualifications are generally weighted more heavily than secondary. If you have completed an approved tertiary preparation course or alternative entry scheme, you will be assessed on the results of that scheme alone, unless you have undertaken subsequent study.
