Modern medical sciences include subjects such as genetics, immunology, nutrition, physiology, microbiology, biochemistry and molecular biology. The Bachelor of Medical Science brings all of these disciplines into the one degree where they form a core of compulsory areas of study. Students also choose additional subjects in complementary disciplines such as neuroscience, psychology, anatomy and ethics. As part of the final year, students undertake Medical Science in the Workplace; this course is designed to provide an opportunity for students undertaking the Bachelor of Medical Science to learn about applications of the medical sciences in the work place. Potential work place opportunities will be presented to students, such as medical research, clinical science, forensic science or therapeutic science. Problems and issues related to different work places and issues such as ethical conduct will be discussed. The course will include visits to, or experience in, one or more of these workplaces.
A fundamental knowledge of the medical sciences provides a broad platform from which to undertake further study in medicine, pharmacology, physiotherapy, nutrition, dietetics or forensic science. There is a joint Bachelor of Medical Science with ANU and the University of South Australia that enables pathways into postgraduate programs into some of these allied health areas. This joint program involves courses at both universities to meet requirements for the programs. Students interested in undertaking the joint program must contact the program convener through the Biology Teaching and Learning Centre.
This program is not available for Semester 2 commencement.
Admission Requirements
Admission to all programs is on a competitive basis, taking into account all relevant academic qualifications. If you hold more than one qualification, admission will be based on your overall record. Tertiary qualifications are generally weighted more heavily than secondary. If you have completed an approved tertiary preparation course or alternative entry scheme, you will be assessed on the results of that scheme alone, unless you have undertaken subsequent study.
