As we become increasingly aware of the complex and interconnected nature of the challenges we confront in creating sustainable societies, interdisciplinary approaches are crucial to our evolving understanding of sustainability in theory and practice. Developing an integrative, holistic appreciation of sustainability requires us to step beyond disciplines and apply our knowledge to the complexity of the world as it is, and as it could be. The Bachelor of Interdisciplinary Studies (Sustainability) is a contemporary interdisciplinary degree which prepares students to tackle this complexity, and address the challenges of sustainability. The degree draws from the complementary strengths of ANU Colleges in education and research for sustainability, and offers opportunities to study widely across the Colleges. The degree is structured around the Sustainability Science major, which includes a core of compulsory courses focused on developing an interdisciplinary perspective, research skills relevant to sustainability, and their application to practice; and a limited suite of courses which provide the foundation for knowledge and skills relevant to the breadth of sustainability challenges.  Students also develop particular knowledge and skills relevant to sustainability by selecting a complementary major or minors.

Admission Requirements

Admission to all programs is on a competitive basis, taking into account all relevant academic qualifications. If you hold more than one qualification, admission will be based on your overall record. Tertiary qualifications are generally weighted more heavily than secondary. If you have completed an approved tertiary preparation course or alternative entry scheme, you will be assessed on the results of that scheme alone, unless you have undertaken subsequent study.

Prerequisites

There are no formal program prerequisites, however science, engineering and information technology majors require prerequisite knowledge as listed above for CHEM1101, PHYS1101 and MATH.
