Note: This program will be available for admission from Semester two, 2013.

The Master of Biological Sciences Advanced is a full-time two year program with one year coursework plus one year research.  The coursework component may be tailored to a student's needs. The program may specialise in a particular area of biology such as biomedical sciences, ecology and evolution, genetics, immunology, and biochemistry. Alternatively the courses may be chosen to provide a broad overview of biological sciences today. Many courses contain practical classes that refresh traditional techniques and develop skills and knowledge in new techniques used in areas of biology. The research year gives an opportunity to enhance and develop detailed knowledge and skills in a specific area of biology in a research laboratory at the ANU.

Learning Outcomes

On completion of the program, graduates would be expected to be able to:

1. demonstrate high level knowledge in the area of their study;

2. apply their knowledge in biological sciences to new problems;

3. interpret, synthesize and critically analyse published literature of relevance to biological sciences;

4. demonstrate basic and complex laboratory skills that are commonly used in biological sciences research;

5. perform experimental work, interpret and analyse results, write reports and collate data into a thesis;

6. present own research work to peers and research scientists;

7. clearly communicate theory and results in both written and oral formats.

Admission Requirement

Bachelor degree. Knowledge at first year undergraduate level in a field of biological sciences relevant to the focus of the Masters program. For example students wishing to focus on molecular biology courses need knowledge of chemistry and cell and molecular biology to first year undergraduate level; students wishing to focus on ecology and evolution need relevant knowledge in whole organismal biology to first year undergraduate level.

English language ability must meet the minimum requirements for admission to ANU.
