Course Description

This course will examine a variety of visual sources for mainly non-Aboriginal art in Australia during our century and up to the present day. While it will in no way attempt a survey of Australian art, it will range widely, looking at different media and art forms including architecture, printmaking and sculpture.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

1. Have a broad understanding of the main streams of development in Australian art since 1900

2. Connect developments in Australian art with those occurring abroad

3. Demonstrate an understanding of changes in Australian art and link these changes with changing social, philosophical and economic developments

4. Research, access and assess information on Australian art

5. Speak and write with confidence on Australian art

Indicative Assessment

Students must submit and perform all assessment tasks in order to complete the course.  Failure to submit assessment items by the last day of the exam period and perform assessment tasks on schedule will result in an NCN.

Oral presentation and paper - 2,000 word tutorial paper (20%), (LO 2,3,4,5)

Research essay - 3,500 word essay (50%), (LO 1,2,3,4,5)

End of semester visual test (20%) (LO1,2,3)

Tutorial participation (10%). (LO 1,2,3,4,5)

Workload

The course consists of two 1 hour lectures, one 1 hour tutorial, and seven hours of associated study time per week

Some of these classes will be held at the National Gallery of Australia.
