| Course Description |
This course will examine aspects of Australian painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and the applied arts from a methodological perspective. It will raise questions concerning the analysis of Australian art by art historians and art critics and will suggest possible alternative readings of Australian art history within a broader international context. |

By the end of this course, you should be able to: 1. Have a broad understanding of the main themes and methodologies involved in the study of Australian art 2. Connect developments in Australian art with those occurring abroad 3. Demonstrate an understanding of changes in Australian art and link these changes with changing social, philosophical and economic developments 4. Research, access and assess information on Australian art and place this within a broader context of art historical research 5. Speak and write with confidence on Australian art |
| Indicative Assessment |
Students must submit and perform all assessment tasks in order to complete the course. Failure to submit assessment items by the last day of the exam period and perform assessment tasks on schedule will result in an NCN. Oral presentation and paper - 2,000 word tutorial paper (20%) (LO 2,3,4,5) Research essay - 3,500 word essay (50%) (LO 1,2,3,4,5) End of semester visual test (20%) (LO 1,2,3) Tutorial participation (10%) (LO 1,2,3,4,5) |
| Workload |
The course consists of two 1 hour lectures, one 1 hour tutorial, and seven hours of associated study time per week. Some of these classes will be held at the National Gallery of Australia. |
