| Course Description |
Painting 1 introduces students to basic skills, techniques and processes of oil and acrylic painting. Studio projects focus on the observation and handling of tonal values, and colour systems and their application in the composition of paintings. Basic principles and concepts of representational and abstract painting are introduced and students are encouraged to learn from historical and contemporary examples. Drawing classes develop observational and experimental skills. Studio theory is delivered as a series of lectures. Occupational health and safety instruction is an integral part of this course. |

Portfolio of studio work and visual journal (80%) [LOs 1 – 4] and Documentation (20%). [LOs 2 – 4] Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress. |

8 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 4 hours per week independent studio practice. |
