Course Description

Sculpture 1 introduces students to basic skills, techniques and processes of sculptural practice. Instruction is through theme based studio projects and studio theory. Students explore formal sculptural language and spatial properties through experimental exercises, observational modeling, casting and constructed form with steel. Students keep visual and technical diaries. Occupational health and safety instruction is an integral part of this course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. utilize skills relevant to the discipline in response to Workshop projects
  2. explore material/s used in Workshop projects
  3. recognize relationships between concept and process
  4. identify historical and theoretical contexts relevant to Workshop projects
Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work and visual journal (80%) [LOs 1 – 4]

and Documentation (20%). [LOs 2 – 4]

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

Workload

8 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 4 hours per week independent studio practice.
