Course Description

This course introduces students to the conceptual and visual possibilities of photography. Students will be required to participate in technical programs and demonstrations aimed at developing an understanding and proficiency in the use of basic photographic and/or computer-based techniques and processes. Occupation Health and Safety instruction is included.

Note: Places in this course are limited. Students are advised to enrol as early as possible.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Identify and demonstrate basic techniques, processes and equipment used in the creative exploration of photography
  2. Establish the beginning of a creative research practice
  3. Show basic awareness of historical and theoretical contexts relevant to your creative research practice
Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work and visual journal (80%) [Learning Outcomes 1 – 3]

Journal (20%) [Learning Outcomes 1 – 3]

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

Workload

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice and other research.
