Course Description

In Book Design 3 students are encouraged to develop an individual project based on selected traditional and alternate approaches. Book design theory and practical binding experience are explored through self-directed project work. Independent research is utilized in the development of personal interests and finished works demonstrate technical skill and conceptual understanding. Occupation Health and Safety instruction is included.

Note: Places in this course are limited. Students are advised to enrol as early as possible.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate increased level of skills in techniques, processes, tools and technologies
  2. Exploit the characteristics of materials and processes in an individual way
  3. Apply concepts to the development of artist’s books
  4. Show increased awareness of relevant historical and theoretical contexts
Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) [LOs 1 – 4]

Journal/Documentation/Studio Theory presentation (20%). [LOs 1 – 4]

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

Workload

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice and other research.
