The aim of this course is to introduce graduate level students to the material properties and possibilities of working with mild steel as a plastic material.  The course will provide experience working with a wide range of metal processes and the hand tools relating to mild steel. Students will work on both self-generated projects and on projects devised to extend expertise in specific techniques  and processes.  Attendance at technical workshops and demonstrations is a requirement.

The course includes instruction in safe working practices and OH&S guidelines and students will be expected to complete various technical exercises and demonstrate competency in the safe use of new equipment and materials.

At the completion of this course, students should be able to:

3. Show a critical awareness of historical and theoretical contexts relevant to the course material

4. Exploit the characteristics of materials and processes in an individual and conceptually developed way

7. Identify and develop personal topics for individual research

8. Demonstrate adherence to OH & S requirements and procedures

Studio investigations 30% [LO 1 – 8]

Portfolio of studio work (40%) [LO: 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8]

Detailed studio journal including 1000 wd written reflection (20%) [LO: 3, 5, 7, 8].

Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress.

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 4 hours per week independent studio practice.
