Course Description

Readings in Classical Chinese history, philosophy and poetry from various periods.

Learning Outcomes

1. To acquire an advanced command of Classical Chinese and its syntax.

2. To acquire further skills of literary translation from Classical Chinse into English.

3. To be knowledgable about a range of issues, both theoretical and methodological, pertaining to Chinese Studies/Sinology

4. To develop advanced skills in the use of a range of Chinese and English language Sinological bibliographical and other reference tools

5. To have applied these various skills, understandings and methodologies to specific topics in the Sinological field

Indicative Assessment

Two translation assignments (20% each)

One essay (min. 2500 words) 35%

Final examination 25%

The first form of assessment listed above (translation assignments) is designed to develop learning outcomes 2 and 3; the essay is designed to develop learning outcomes 3-5; the final examination is designed to consolidate learning outcome 1.
