| Course Description |
In this course, students will write a thesis based on a research topic of their choice in the field of Culture Health and Medicine in order to complete the Research component of the MCHM (Research) program. The course is designed for students wanting to do in-depth research as a component of their MCHM studies as well as providing a preparatory opportunity for PhD studies. In collaboration with the Course Convenor and a nominated supervisor, students will choose a topic of interest to them and undertake a research project. Students will draw upon the key concepts learned in CHMD8014 and CHMD8004 when conceiving and planning the project. The research may be based on either fieldwork or literature research. . In the former case, ethics clearance would generally be required. A supervisor with knowledge or experience in the relevant field of study will be nominated, with whom the student is expected to schedule regular contact for advice and support. The course program will involve the development of a research proposal, presentation of a seminar and the write-up of the project in a Thesis of 20,000 words. |
| Learning Outcomes |
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. Design and develop research activities and questions, including identifying and reviewing relevant literature and selecting appropriate research methods related to their research topics (Assessment 1). 2. Critically engage with current scholarship in the field of culture health and medicine to inform research and contribute to knowledge in this interdisciplinary field (Assessments 1 & 2). 3. Demonstrate resourcefulness, creativity and flexibility in the application of knowledge and skills to solve problems related to research (Assessments 1 & 2). 4. Demonstrate the ability to communicate research ideas to a non-specialist audience. (Assessment 1). |
