| Course Description |
This course examines international migration from both theoretical and empirical perspectives to provide students with an understanding of the factors behind current trends in international population movements and their impacts on the migrants themselves and the countries of origin and destination. Specific topics examined each year include gender and migration, the concept of 'replacement migration', the effectiveness of temporary migrant worker programs and the Global Commission on International Migration report. Case studies focussing on Australia, the US, Europe and the Asian region allow for a comparison of the different types of movements and associated policy response. |
| Learning Outcomes |
Students complete the readings each week for discussion in class. The course is taught intensively as a graduate research seminar over an eight-week period. Students then have four weeks to write a research essay during which time the course convenor will be available for consultation. Students completing the course should be able to:

| Indicative Assessment |
Assessment will be based on seminar participation (10% of total grade), a short written assignment (1500 words, 25% of total grade) and a research essay on a topic of your choice (4000-6000 words, 65% of total grade). |
