Course Description

This course allows a special topic of study for individuals or small groups of students who wish to gain particular or additional knowledge in a topic in Earth Science not covered in other courses taught in the School or elsewhere in the University.

The course will consist of an Earth Science research project relevant to a student's coursework.  The details of the project will be negotiated between the student and the supervisor/s and be approved by the Research School of Earth Science Associate Director of Education.

The course is intended for graduate students.

Learning Outcomes

On satisfying the requirements of this course students will have the knowledge and skills to:

1. Plan and engage in a chosen Earth Science research topic;

2. Keep accurate and detailed records of work undertaken, including literature review, lab or field work;

3. Work constructively with active researchers on real research problems;

4. Critically evaluate their own work and results, as well as results reported in the literature; and

5. Communicate research concepts and contexts clearly and effectively both in writing and orally.

Indicative Assessment

Written Proposal  (10% LO 1-3)

Seminar/Oral Presentation  (20% LO 4, 5)

Written Report (70% LO 1-5)

Workload

Students will work closely with their supervisor on the research topic and typically have 30 hours of supervised work, 30 hours of individual work and 70 hours to produce the oral presentation and the report.
