Course Description

This course provides an overview of recent developments and new directions in Australian writing, across a range of genres from fiction and poetry to forms that blur the boundaries between fiction and non-fiction.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Interpret, analyse and discuss contemporary Australian writing within a wider literary and historical context;
  2. Conduct independent research and use it effectively in developing arguments;
  3. Analyse and assess critical and theoretical debates about themes of history, identity and place in Australian writing.
Indicative Assessment

Essay (1500 words) 40% [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3]

Comparative Essay (2500 words) 50% [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3]

Tutorial Participation (10%) [Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 3]

Workload

2 hr lecture, 1 hr tutorial and 7 hrs reading and assignment preparation per week.
