Course Description

Topics for study may include: Homeric epic, drama (Euripides and Sophocles), historiography (Herodotos, Thucydides, Xenophon, oratory (Lysias, Demosthenes), art, architecture, Athenian society, Plato and Aristotle, Hellenistic Alexandria, New Testament, the novel. In studying the chosen text or texts and its political, social, and literary context, students continue their study of Ancient Greek language.

Students will select an appropriate text in consultation with the convener.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have:

  1. increased their ability to read Ancient Greek with pleasure and understanding: some texts at sight, any texts with the aid of dictionaries, grammars, translations, and textual notes.
  2. become acquainted with a particular author or set of authors, the world they lived in, and the literary genre in question.
  3. reviewed and extended their understanding of the grammatical constructions of Ancient Greek; and they will have extended their Ancient Greek vocabulary.
Indicative Assessment

Major essay, 3,500 words (50%) (LO 1, 2, 3)

Final examination, three-hours (50%) (LO 1, 2, 3)

Workload

One meeting of one hour and nine hours of associated study time each week.
