This intermediate Hindi-Urdu language course aims to improve students’ command of modern spoken Hindi-Urdu as well as increase their awareness of the culture in which it is used. The course will bring the students to a level where they are able to engage with real Hindi-Urdu language media on a daily basis. The themes dealt with in the course will differ from year to year but may include such topics as development issues and the environment, youth and communities, sports and leisure.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

1. Express themselves clearly and without much sign of having to restrict what they want to say in Hindi-Urdu.

2. Have an improved fluency in communicative skills in Hindi-Urdu

3. Have a deepened knowledge of the Hindi-Urdu language by looking at it from within India

4. Demonstrate a formal understanding of key grammatical features

5. Attain a level of linguistic sophistication whereby students are able to give oral presentations on aspects of Indian culture.

6. Demonstrate generic skills, e.g., critical thinking, written and oral communication, research, teamwork.

Oral and Written tests (totalling 50 per cent), Essay in Hindi (50 per cent).

Contact Hours: Three hours of lectures in the morning and workshop sessions in the afternoon five days per week in a city in northern India. The course will be held in January and February for a period of six weeks. Emphasis is on acquisition of conversational skills in Hindi.

Prerequisites: Introductory Hindi B (HIND1003) and Basic Hindi Conversation B (HIND1007)
